Hi There!

Welcome to my blog! This space has been used over the past several years to document mainly my natural hair journey and several different aspects of my life such as spiritual matters, my jewelry design, and parenting. I will from time to time post on this blog but my newly revamped blog can be found at BeautifullyCurled.com. My First Twist Set in 2011

I didn't originally plan on twisting my hair at all until an opportunity had arisen earlier this week for Joshua and I to take engagement photos on tomorrow. The photographer was very responsive a few days ago but not so much now so we are most likely not going to take our pictures tomorrow. Nevertheless, I wanted to wear my hair in a twist out for the photo session if it was to happen. That is why my hair has been in twists for the past several days out the blue.

Here is a video explaining what I used on my hair to style my twists and showing my twists at different angles. Protective styling has really paid off because my twists are definitely fuller than a year ago although they don't look too much longer. And when I squeeze all my twists together...can you say sponge cake? My hair has never felt like this before. I even had to let me fiance' witness the feeling...lol.

Stay tuned for the twist out results coming soon!

My Braids After Last Saturday's Wash Session

I aim to wash my hair every Friday or Saturday as a part of my regimen (with today being an exception pending on whether or not I can get a photo session in tomorrow). I wanted to post this sooner but this past week has been a challenge physically due to the fact that I have been trying to get over a cold while taking care of my daughter who has been having a rough time with her cold. It has been one of those weeks where I just didn't want to be bothered too much. Therefore, instead of twittering, youtubing, and blogging, I spent most of my free time this week wedding planing while cuddled in my blanket. So now I am 'catching up'.

Here are some pictures of my hair freshly washed and conditioned, detangled, and braided. You can check out my hair washing routine in the tab section.

She is a trip! Deuces!

Zakiah's Hairstyle at the Moment

I washed and conditioned Zakiah's hair last night (will post her regimen soon). She has a big habit of pulling off ALL her elastic bands from the top section of her head. So she had a mini afro when she got up this morning (I forgot to take a picture). She rarely bothers with the bottom half of her head.

Originally the top section was divided into two sections last night. However, this morning, I decided to just make one ponytail on the top of her head and add bangs. I used Kinky Curly Curling Custard to create the curls in her ponytail and bangs after re-wetting her sections. I added a headband and one of the huge flower clippies I made last year to accessorize her outfit.

Leave-In Conditioner Recipe I Use

Here is a video explaining what I use in my leave-in conditioner recipe:

It is a modified version of Kimmaytube's leave-in recipe that I have been using for over 10 months now with very consistent results so I want to thank Kim for sharing her recipe with us.

Here is the link to her recipe video:

What I use in my recipe is:
2 tablespoons of Kinky Curly Knot Today Leave-in Conditioner
2 tablespoons of Aloe Vera Juice
2 teaspoons of Jojoba Oil
1 teaspoon of Castor Oil
1 teaspoon of Coconut Oil

I make a batch of this to last the entire week between my daughter and I. It has to be refrigerated because of the aloe vera juice. I apply this to my wet hair twice a week: right after my hair has been washed and conditioned and mid-week.

Over THREE (3) FEET of Hair????

I sat down and thought about how long my hair could have been if I took proper care of it from the very first moment I put those scissors down after chopping off all my relaxed hair 7 years ago.

My hair grows on average 6 inches a year (0.5 inches a month). So 6 inches times 7 years would equal to

42 inches of hair (3.5 feet of hair)

Crazy right?! That comes to around mid-thigh on me.

My longest strand on my head is around 18 inches. That means that about 2 feet of my hair has either been cut or broken off my head in 7 years.

That is even crazier!

Granted, I don't want 42 inches of hair on my head, that would be WAY too much hair for me to manage. But it is just amazing how much hair I could have had if I kept it healthy, wasn't scissor happy at times through the years, and never had damaged ends.

Well I thought I was just share this with you as I celebrate 7 years of being natural. On to year number 8 and 6 inches of HEALTHY hair growth and retention! :)

New Earrings!

I made two pair of earrings today. I posted one up today:

Here are the second pair:

I am not feeling the background for these pair of earrings so I might retake pictures of these tomorrow. OR I might just go ahead and list them tonight and update the pictures tomorrow. I am not sure why the pictures are oriented this way when I upload them to the post.

I just ordered some LOVELY beads today so I can wait to get them in my mailbox in the upcoming week or two. My earring display cards should be coming in the mail real soon. Can't wait for all these goodies!

I Joined Hairlista!

I was referred to Hairlista by one of my Twitter followers and decided to go ahead and join (well, I had to join in order to view the follower's profile page on there). It is set up similar to KISS (which I haven't logged into for a minute...oops!). I will see how the vibe is over there...seems to be a very informative and active site. Are you on Hairlista? If so, let me know so we can be friends!

My Hair in its Natural State (No Products)

I have come to the conclusion that the internal microphone on my netbook is not good so I will be doing videos from my digital camera from now on although it will take half a day to upload them to YouTube (if you know how I can fix this then please let me know)! Here is a video I did just showing the natural state of my hair aka freshly washed and no products.

My New Blog

Don't ask me how many blogs I have started...lol. But this one is specifically designed to cater to my natural hair journey and my etsy shop. I felt like I needed to consolidate my most frequent interests into one area. I pretty much added a bulk of my natural hair journey topics to my blog in the form of pages, which can be accessed through the tabs above. I will be refining my blog over the time to make it as user friendly as possible. But in the meanwhile, I hope you can navigate through my blog fairly well and hope you enjoy the contents! Thanks for visiting!

I Heart Target's Dresses

Zakiah spent the past weekend with her second family (close Church friend's house who Zakiah truly sees as her family especially since they have a son and daughter who she loves to play with). I forgot to pack up her Sunday dress so asked my friend if she can find her a nice dress to wear to Church that's anything BUT pink or purple. She said sure, no problem. Well, when I saw Zakiah after Sunday School, she had on this gorgeous white and blue polka dot dress with a hot pink bow. What an awesome combination! Of course it had to come from Target because Target makes some of the CUTEST dresses for little girls. I haven't been there recently to see what is out for little girls, but I know a couple months ago, they had some really pretty winter dresses on sale.

Target never fails even when Zakiah fails to smile for the camera...

Still ignoring me...

Dada's little girl. They were so coordinated Sunday. Love it!
